Akureyri

Akureyri travel at your finger tips

Akureyri is the second largest city in Iceland. Situated along the northern fjords, this fishing village enjoys passing envoys of cruise ships bearing tourists during the summer months. Typically, visitors who arrive overland or via the airport use Akureyri as a base from which to explore the northernmost reaches of Iceland’s more remote countryside.

Attractions

Akureyri serves as a great home base for expeditions into the surrounding, more remote regions of Iceland. Those travelling to Myvatn usually stop on their way through Akureyri.

Travel agents in the city organise tours to a stretch of nearby sulfur fields known as the Devil’s Kitchen. Tour buses to this attraction usually take about an hour to arrive at the site from Akureyri.

Most of this area’s allure is centred on its natural beauty. The Waterfall of the Gods (Godafoss) is beautiful, and the gaping crater of Viti also draws its own crowd of spectators.

In the city itself are some nice botanical gardens. There are a couple of local museums–one dedicated to art and the other to natural history, and the old church of Akureyri also warrants a visit.

Entertainment

While the city of Akureyri isn’t ripe with things to do, you will find a fair share of bars and restaurants near the city centre. The city is famous for its hamburgers, served with French fries inside the bun itself, and you’ll find these at several local eateries. For fresh air and exercise, walking out toward the waterline is a pleasant way to pass a few hours, though the inland terrain may be a bit too dramatic for the faint–hearted.

Hotels in in Akureyri

Akureyri is equipped with several hotels to accommodate the influx of tourists during the warmer months. The best of these Akureyri hotels can be secured through online booking, which usually ensures the best rates.

Akureyri is a transportation hub for the north of Iceland, and you’ll find most of the best Akureyri hotels near the bust station and airport. Most of the Akureyri hotels are within a short distance of these stop–off points.

Out and about – car hire in Akureyri

If you intend to do any exploring in or around Akureyri, a hire car is a must. The landscape transitions from the fjords to the mountains, making for varied terrain that’s difficult to navigate on foot. A hire car is by far the best way to explore the sulphur fields and waterfall.

You can arrange for your hire car to be waiting for you in Akureyri, at the airport or the bus station. The biggest influx of tourists happens during the summer, and vehicles and other accommodation may be limited at this time. Book your hire car in advance to make sure you get the best deal.
