Athens is an extraordinary place to visit if you like ancient history and interesting cultural landmarks. The city is surrounded by beautiful hills, has a multitude of attractions, and is a good location to start from if you decide to head to the nearby Greek Islands.
Attractions
Some of Athens' most famous landmarks sit atop the ancient Acropolis, presiding over the city as it has done for several millennia. Sites here include the Parthenon, Propylaia gate and Erechtheion - dedicated to Athena, Goddess of Love. This is only a starting place for many fine examples of ancient Greek architecture.
You can also see the Theatre of Dionysos, Hadrian’s Roman Arch, the monument of Lysikrates, the few remains of the enormous Temple of Zeus and also one of Athens’ most famous landmarks, the Panathenaic Stadium, used for the original Olympics in 1896.
If you like museums, Athens has some great ones. The National Archaeological Museum is one of them and houses gold artefacts from Mycenae and spectacular Minoan frescoes from Santorini (Thira), among other exquisite objects and antiquities. The Goulandris Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art, boasts a powerful collection of elegant marble figurines.
There are also plenty of places to shop. Restaurants offer all varieties of delicious cuisines, but you must try some of the Greek food before you leave the capital.

Though driving in Athens may be a bit chaotic, a hire car is worthwhile for exploring the many incredible ancient sights of Peloponnese to the south. Once you leave the city, driving a hire car is easy and, within two hours, you come upon a region which is both rich in history and beautiful.
