Hradcany Castle is the seat of government and dominates the city from its elevated position across the river in the ‘Nove Mestre’ (new quarter). This huge complex dates back to the city’s brief heyday as the centre of the Hapsburg Empire and includes the impressive St Vitius Cathedral – a Gothic masterpiece, as well as other important sites like the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane and castle gardens.
The ancient Charles Bridge links the two banks and it’s a bustling pedestrian thoroughfare full of buskers, artists and tourists taking photos of the wonderful vistas across the Vltava river.
Old Town Square is the focal point of the delightful old town and its many windy and ancient lanes. The square is lined with remarkable architecture, including the Medieval Old Town Hall, the Gothic steeples of the Tyn Church, the Baroque towers of St Nicholas Cathedral and endless handsome Baroque apartment buildings.
Around the city are several other important places of worship including St Nicholas church below the castle, and the Old Jewish synagogue, with its ancient cemetery.

Eating is a pleasure in Prague and in the summer there are endless outdoor restaurants lining the many squares, some found down hidden lanes. There are several local specialties but it is beer which the Czechs are famous for and several local brands are widely offered at great prices. The city is also famous for its numerous nightly soirées of classical music in the concert halls and cathedrals of Prague.
