The Vietnam Memorial is adjacent, a simple but effective submerged structure bearing the names of 58,202 American casualties of this war.
Not far from mall is the White House, a world-renowned American icon and home to every president since 1800. It’s a huge, heavily-guarded mansion and is open to limited tours.
The Smithsonian Institution, an enormous and exhausting collection of museums most of which line the National Mall, really shouldn't be overlooked. The most popular of these great museums is the National Air & Space Museum.

Out and about - car hire in Washington, D.C.
